AFTER THE FAE DISAPPEARED, Mordred stared for a few moments. He couldn’t pinpoint what, exactly, had made him let her go. At the very least, her escape with whatever Merlin had told her would ensure a complicated fight.

And after the way Carleigh keeps jabbing at my mother, he deserves complications.

The young sorcerer turned his gaze to his father’s unconscious form. He picked up the leeches off the ground and replaced them on his skin. At his hiss of pain, Mordred grinned.

He left Merlin and returned outside, having done his part. In a corner of the castle, he leaned on ramparts and let his mind wander, closing his eyes. It wasn’t long before he dropped into another dream with Vivienne.

The enchantress’ aura was scattered all over the place. He could read fear at losing control, doubt over what was happening, and uncertainty about her future... But it was the last emotion that really made him grin: anger at Sébastien.

“Bad day?”

Vivienne turned to him, no longer surprised. “You could say that.”

“There is much angst in you...” He tilted his head to the side, hiding a smile. “And fury for being put in a situation you never asked for or wanted.”

Vivienne frowned at his words. “How would you know all this?”

“I recognize it all because you and I are the same, sweeting. And I understand you better than anyone.”

Though she wanted to contest him, deep down the enchantress felt he wasn’t lying.

“I can help you...” Mordred latched onto her dread. “You are right to be afraid. Please, allow me to provide guidance.”

“How?”

“You do not know how to handle the corruption inside, but I do. I have dealt with enough of it on my own, and survived. It is not a matter to handle alone.” He paused, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Let me come to you.”

She glanced at him, biting her lip. “Who helped you?”

Mordred’s brow creased, then smoothed as he caught her meaning. “You should know him.... He spoke very highly of you. Long white beard, blue eyes, carries a staff?”

Vivienne’s mouth opened in surprise. “Merlin!?”

“Yes. I didn’t know if you would believe me when these dreams started, and he is too busy attempting to undo a certain necromancer’s immortality. But he asked me to keep an eye on you.” His grip tightened on her, then released. “He would want me to help, considering he is unable to.”

The enchantress moved away from him, shaking her head softly. “I doubt there is anything you can do. Whatever it is, it’s already inside me. I...” Tears streamed down her cheeks, silent and unwelcome. Never had she felt so alone, so at a loss on what to do.

“I can assist you, if you’ll let me,” Mordred insisted. “But you have to let me join you on Earth.”

Vivienne whirled around, her eyes narrowed in confusion. “Where, exactly, are you?”

“I am in a different dimension, much like Merlin. When he helped me defeat my demons, he also found me a safe place to live in. He promised to come get me, but then.
